It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of James "Jim" McDuff Munholland Jr. On March 3, 2024, after a seven-year courageous battle from a tragic accident that left him a quadriplegic, Jim succumbed to his injuries and passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital. A native of his beloved Long Beach, Jim was born August 24, 1944, to James and Elizabeth Munholland.
Jim graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and was a member of the Sigma Chi, Aces, and Dinyas Fraternities. He made lifelong friends and proudly served on the reunion committee for many years after graduation. Jim also played Varsity football and was a letterman. He treasured his relationships and friendships and spending time with everyone he could. He especially loved seeing his former classmates at monthly luncheons at Schooner or Later chatting about beloved memories they shared and new ones they've created. He was an avid racquetball player with a regular group of friends and he spoke more enthusiastically about the friendships he made rather than the games they played.
Jim served in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict and had a lengthy career as an independent insurance agent. He then met the love of his life, Lawna, in 1985 and they married in 1992. They lived in Belmont Heights and then eventually moved to Leisure World in Seal Beach. In his retirement, Jim found a passion for traveling the country by RV and sailing the seas on cruise ships with his wife, family, and close friends, especially his cousin, Fred Brady, and wife, Monica.
Having served in the Vietnam War, Jim was eventually admitted to the Spinal Cord Facility at the V.A. which is usually very hard to come by. He finally had his own huge room and bathroom. He spent his last 2 1/2 years there and couldn’t have had better care. Jim is truly an inspiration to his family and friends. Very strong and courageous the entire time, always positive, always smiling when people came to visit, and just all around good-natured.
Jim is survived by his loving family… his wife Lawna, sons James "Jimmy" III and wife Tara, Cameron and wife Tiffany, his sister Betti Gregory, brother Tom and wife Jan, and grandchildren Kellan, Phoebe, Zoë, Lyla, and Dexter. He also leaves behind many, many friends that he cherished.
Jim will be remembered as an inspiration for his infectious optimism and positivity. In times of challenges he would say "I can either choose to be happy or angry… I'll choose to be happy”.
