Juventino Garcia Pérez, cherished father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully at home in Whittier on Thursday, July 6, 2023, under the care of his daughters.
Tenacious and hard-working, he embodied devotion to family. Dutifully bearing the mantle of supporting his family in a time of need, he began his working life as an eight-year-old. Through his and his older brother’s dedication to that charge, his mother and sisters thrived. Even so, he never let up nor ever considered his job done, eighty years later.
At his first job at that cattle ranch in Brownsville, he was inspired to strive for the yet unknown and untried. In the days when correspondence school was common, he took correspondence courses to include learning how to pilot a plane. His dreams took him to L.A. where he met our mother, both of them having been tasked with chaperoning the first date of his friend and her older sister. He knew the moment he saw Mom that she was his future and it was further cemented when the couple they were supposed to chaperone ditched them early that evening.
Three children later, with our mother’s support, he accomplished a full electronics career, a successful counter restaurant venture featuring our mother’s most delicious dishes, building the first ever console VCR that we used to play an advanced video recording of Star Wars, and long before they were popular opening a water store which he manned 6 days a week as far as 10 days before his passing. Moreover, he will forever be remembered for his countless pearls of wisdom and one-liners.
Born in Monterrey, Mexico December 31, 1934, he was a proud United States citizen. He is survived by his children Leni Schlieper (Scott), Sylvia Mahlstede (Jeff), and Tino Perez, his seven grandchildren Trevor Schlieper, Kristen Schlieper (Gabriel Pocrass), Ian Schlieper, Adrian Mahlstede, Christian Mahlstede, Noah Perez, and Bricen Perez, two younger sisters, a host of nieces and nephews, neighboring store owners, and his patrons who all miss him dearly. Juventino will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
Juventino was reunited at Heaven's Gate with his three siblings.
