Ofelia Ramirez Garcia, age 90, passed away peacefully and pain-free in her family home on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, by her side were her daughter, Lupe, and her two adult grandchildren, Maggie, and Bernie. Ofelia was born on January 25th, 1932, to her mother, Petronila Garcia de Ramirez and her father, Efren Ramirez.
After completing 6th grade in school, Ofelia was taken out of school to work and help the family, but that didn’t stop her from educating herself; she became excellent at math, history, and literature. From a young age, Ofelia loved to sew and eventually became a seamstress for the neighborhood. Her specialty was women’s dresses including weddings and party dresses, all her earnings were to help the family. Later she worked as a caregiver for elderly individuals in the US, where she obtains her legal residency.
Ofelia was a single mother, once her daughter was born, she worked harder to support the family and her daughter. Years later she came to California with her sister Dolores and Dolores’s husband Jimmy, together they were able to purchase a home. For thirty years, Ofelia worked as a machine operator at a minimum wage of $1.48 an hour.
Nine years later, Jimmy passed away and Ofelia continued to make sure the family had food on the table and a roof over their heads. Ofelia was a caring woman who spent most of her life putting others before herself.
Ofelia is survived by her loving family: Daughter - Lupe Galvez, Grandchildren - Maggie Chavez and Bernie Galvez, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ofelia will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Ofelia was reunited at the gates of Heaven with her three sisters and five brothers.
There will be a funeral service held for Ofelia at St. Hilary Church in Pico Rivera on Monday, January 6, 2023, viewing will be at 9:30 am and Mass at 10:30 am. Please feel free to attend if you would like to pay your respects.
