Alexander Edward Bernard, Age 57, a dedicated disciple of a Christ.
He was born in Oakland, CA on March 10th, 1963 & went to be with his creator in Downey, CA on March 28th, 2020.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Christela, 8 children: Ismael, Alex, Christopher, Crystal, Sara, Rose, Jennifer & Zackery; 7 grandchildren: Ismael, Alex, Jasmine, Mikki, Q, Elijah, & Evan; & his beloved sisters, Zenaida, Tanya, & Tisha.
Alex grew up in Northern California. He had a few setbacks in his early adult years & found himself addicted to drugs with no hope in sight. Just as he hit rock bottom he came to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in 1984. The day he walked through the doors of Teen Challenge his life was forever changed.
Just 2 years after serving in Teen Challenge he met his beautiful wife & his life changed again. He knew she was a gift from God & after a delicious home cooked meal he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.
Alex & Chris spent 20+ years working alongside each other in ministry at the Teen Challenge Thrift Store. During that time their family grew & their heart for people grew as well. It was always Alex’s dream to be a pastor. He succeeded in that dream over & over again. He has mentored many people and won them over to the body of Christ. He lived a life of servant-hood. He was a walking miracle.
His name means Defender of Mankind & that’s exactly what he did. He did whatever he could to bring people to Christ.
In his off time he enjoyed cruising in his 1948 Chevy Fleet Master. He couldn’t turn down a Slurpee from 7-11 & he even enjoyed the occasional “Chick Flick.” His favorite was A Walk To Remember. He could quote it word for word. “Their love was pure,” he’d say.
Throughout the years Alex’s hunger to reach the lost grew & grew. He would constantly think of ways to show God's love in a practical way. In his final assignment here on Earth he began serving at Desert Reign Church as the Outreach Pastor. He loved to pass out food to the community, preach sermons to the congregation, cook for others any chance he got, visit local hospitals, & feed the homeless at Skid Row.
He also was apart of the Rotary Club of Downey & would volunteer to serve the community at Lewis Elementary School.
He was truly thankful for each opportunity he got.
Alex truly served as the hand & feet of God, devoting countless hours to bring glory to His name.
He did it all with humbleness & gratitude.
A celebration of Alex’s life will be announced in the weeks to come.
