Avenida Gamponia was born on November 21, 1921 to Dominga Tovera & Domingo T. Jose in the Philippines and entered into eternal rest on April 28, 2015 in Torrance, California. She was 92 years old.
Avenida is survived by her brother Luther T. Jose of Montebello, sister Teresa Baligad of Oceanside, sister Phoebe (Herminio) Gamponia of Spencer West Virginia, and sister Wilma Ryder of Carson. She was greeted at Heaven's Gate by her siblings Felicidad Fernandez and Ruben T. Jose who both preceded her in death.
How big can gratitude be for someone who has given so much? She started out as a kindergarten teacher. On a scholarship to Silliman University she did child care so she can send home funds. On a graduate scholarship to this country, studying at Scarritt College and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, still she sent home funds for working beyond her busy student life. She travelled to Europe as a delegate to international events. Upon her return she worked as a student and youth advocate, then a college teacher. Some of her exclusive friends have become presidents of her alma mater, the college where she taught became a university. She funded my fare to graduate school in Boston. Innumerable others she affirmed and funded. She gave her own home to some family members so they can pursue education in her homeland and abroad. She has always been giving. No measure of gratitude can repay all that she has done.
Condolences may be sent to her family through our website.
