Barbara Katherine Hiveley
June 7, 1936 — October 17, 2012
Barbara Katherine Hiveley, age 76, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2012 at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach. She was born June 7, 1936 in Bell, CA, daughter to Alice and Ervin "Dutch" Arnbrecht. She graduated from Compton High School and later attended Compton College and Long Beach State University where she obtained a Bachelors degree in Physical Education. She was a gifted tennis player for both Compton and Long Beach State. She went on to teach math and P.E. at East Middle school in Downey.
She married John "Jack" A. Hiveley on January 31, 1958 in Downey, CA. Together they had one daughter and two sons. After raising her three children, Barbara pursued a career in volleyball officiating and ultimately became a high school and college level official and scorekeeper. She was also an accomplished instructor with a unique passion to teach and mentor others. During her 35 years of officiating, she contributed significantly to the sport and made many lifelong relationships along the way. She continued this active lifestyle and career all the way up to her unfortunate passing.
Barbara loved to be out and about and truly enjoyed being in the presence of God's creation. She enjoyed the simple things in life like watching her grandchildren play sports, entertaining at home, traveling, having lunch with friends and family, and of course biking with friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, Jack; daughter, Dara (Dennis Dillon), sons, David (Rachel), and Duane (Patti); and six grandchildren; Logan, Sawyer, Ayden, Ella, Seth, and John.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Barbara touched are invited to her memorial service to be held at 10:00 am on Friday, November 2, 2012 at the First Baptist Church of Downey, 8348 E. Third Street, Downey, CA. A reception will follow at the church.
