Barbara Van Leeuwen Marshall, age 85, passed away on September 7, 2024, at her home in Lakewood, California, after a brief illness. Born on September 28, 1938, in Orange City, Iowa, Barbara spent most of her working life as a department administrator at several universities, including the University of Chicago, Wheaton College (Massachusetts), and the Rhode Island School of Design. She touched the lives of many students over the years. She spent almost 25 years employed at California State University of Long Beach, from which she earned a Bachelor’s degree at the age of 67. Completing her college degree, a process she began in 1956, fulfilled a lifelong dream. She loved to sing and was an active participant in church choirs wherever she lived. She enjoyed traveling and visited Hawaii, London, the Netherlands,
and Spain along with many trips to Maryland with her beloved husband Richard Dickinson, who passed away in 2021. When at home she enjoyed cooking and watching the many hummingbirds that flocked to her patio feeders. She loved her many pets, including dogs, cats and chickens. Her last dog, Lady was a tremendous comfort to her. She was known by her friends for her positive, supportive attitude and her smile. She encouraged everyone she met, always willing to share a story or her lively sense of humor.
Barbara will be missed by her sister Linda Haan of Modesto, California, her daughter Michele Tuttle and son-in-law Jim Tuttle, of Columbia, Maryland, her grandchildren Lindsay Tuttle, of Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Calvin Tuttle, of Boston, Massachusetts, and her stepchildren Eddie Dickinson, of Mesa, Arizona, and Charlene Campbell, of Grapevine, Texas.
