Betty Jane Thiles Thompson Montemurro died on April 6, 2019 at the age of 97. She was born on February 23, 1922 in Shelby County, Iowa to Edward William and Cecil Marie (Kohl) Thiles. Betty was the oldest living granddaughter of Ada McColl Thiles who is in the famous picture of The Cow Chip Lady holding a wheel barrow of cow chips which depicts pioneer living on a Nebraska homestead. The picture of Ada was taken by her Mother, Polly Roundy McColl. The child in the picture is Bert McColl, Ada McColl’s brother. Many mistake the child as being a girl, however, in those days, boys did not begin to wear pants until potty trained.

Betty married Lloyd L. Thompson on January 16, 1945 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They lived in Iowa, Van Nuys, California, East Independence, Missouri, Los Angeles, California and Long Beach California. Lloyd died on August 8, 1965 in Long Beach, California.

Betty married Michael V. Montemurro on January 28, 1972 in Long Beach, California. They lived in Long Beach until Mickey’s death on July 5, 1991 in Harbor City, California.

Betty is survived by Shirley Metz, Beverly Bulone, Anna Mae Thompson, and Mick Montemurro Jr. Her son, Keith Thompson passed away on November 12, 2018. Betty had 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

The ashes of Betty are buried with her husband, Michael V. Montemurro, at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, California.
