Delia Hortensia Carbajal was born in Los Angeles, California on the 29th day of June 1932. She was the only girl out of four children born to Ignacio Vazquez, and Carmen Martinez. Both parents were immigrants from Abasolo, Guanajuato Mexico. Ignacio (Nacho) was an extremely hard worker who made is living working at Garlinghouse Brothers Manufacturing Company in Los Angeles, California. Carmen was a homemaker, and a very savvy real estate investor.
Delia Studied at Stevenson Junior High School in East Los Angeles, and continued her High School studies at Sacred Heart of Mary High School in Montebello California. She then went on to study at Sawyers Business College where she earned a Secretarial certification degree in July of 1952.
Delia was married to Carlos J. Carbajal on September 27, 1953 in Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Boyle Heights California. Carlos, more commonly known as (Charlie) was a very successful businessman who acquired a company called Walter W. Lawrence Ink Company. Charlie was also the son of Mexican immigrant parents, and was a transplant from El Paso Texas. He quickly became a well know figure in Los Angeles, becoming one of the Who’s Who in the business world and also State and local political world. He became one of the top minority business owners of Los Angeles. He was very well respected by Law enforcement, politicians, and other community business owners.
Delia had four children, Carlos, Steve, Delia, and Mark. Delia was a homemaker, and a fantastic caring loving mother. Because her family always came first, she did not start her career until the children were old enough to go to school and stay home by themselves. She began working as a librarian in South El Monte, and quickly sought to challenge herself by securing an administrative position at the Los Angeles County Juvenile Court System. She worked in the court system for over 20 years. Delia also completed her civic duty by being selected and serving on the Los Angeles County Grand Jury from 1978 to 1979.
While she maintained her home, she managed her mother’s real estate, and also cared for her mother Carmen until her passing in 2001. Soon after, Charlie’s health began to decline. She retired to take care of her husband, and did so until his passing in 2007.
Delia was a caring, generous, and giving person. She always sacrificed her own needs for her family. Her health began to decline in late 2016. She fought bravely clinging to life until her passing on the 13th day of March 2019. She is survived by 4 children, and 11 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. She will be missed dearly. May she forever rest in peace with the Lord, Charlie and her parents.
