Vingnza Gianformaggio (Frances Virginia Calia), 99, was born in Castelvetrano, Sicily on April 11, 1913 and passed away peacefully at her residence in Montebello, California on November 10, 2012. She came to America with her mother and father when she was a baby. She spent her childhood in St. Louis, Mo. where she met and married John A. Calia in 1929. They had two sons, Andrew and Vincent. She passed away on she and her late husband's 83rd wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Calia's family owned and ran several small businesses. Her favorite was the candy and ice cream store. Upon becoming an American citizen, she changed her name to Frances Virginia Calia. In 1947 her family moved to Montebello, Ca. where she lived and raised her family for the rest of her life. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, sewing, travel and took much pride in being a wonderful homemaker. Her greatest love was spending time with family and friends. Frances Virginia always made you feel most welcome in her warm, loving home.
A Graveside service will be held on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 12:30pm at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
She is survived by her sons, Vincent Calia of Montebello and Andrew Henry (Diane) Calia of Canyon Country, 4 grandchildren, Lori Crawford, Tammy Cutright, Cheri Williams and predeceased in death by John Vincent Calia. She also leaves 9 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandson and her brother, Frank (Jackie) Gianformaggio of Yorba Linda.
