María Raquel Guadalupe Perez Sánchez García (affectionately known as “Lupita” and “Doña Lupe”), a woman whose kindness and humor left an unforgettable mark on everyone she met, lived a life overflowing with love, laughter, and devotion. Born on October 29, 1942, in Cuquio, Jalisco, Mexico, Doña Lupe’s early life was filled with the warmth of family and the deep connections she built in Ixtlahuacan del Río, where she grew up surrounded by friends and neighbors. Her radiant spirit was nurtured by her beloved Abuelita Pachita, her mother Genoveva, and her brother Pancho.
From a young age, Doña Lupe’s joy was contagious, and she shared it generously. Her mother, Genoveva, a teacher and church cantor and organist with a voice like an angel, shared her gift of music, which became a source of endless happiness for Doña Lupe. She often brought celebrations to life with her singing, her voice echoing through holidays and gatherings with a sense of joy that made everyone feel special.
Though life presented challenges, Doña Lupe’s determination, strong family bonds and unwavering faith guided her. Her mother worked tirelessly to provide her children an education, a rarity for women in Mexico at that time. Doña Lupe’s path to nursing school in La Barca, Jalisco, was a testament to this dedication, but fate had other plans. Her heart found its true calling in the love she shared with Luis Benavidez Garcia, the man who would become her devoted husband for 50 years.
Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and unity, raising three children—Norma Edith, Maribel, and Luis Rene—in El Monte, CA. Their love was the foundation of their home, and Don Luis often said that marrying Doña Lupe was the greatest decision he ever made. Her love for her family was boundless, expressed in countless ways—through her lovingly prepared meals, lively family games, and deep commitment to cultural traditions. As a mother and grandmother, she nurtured her family with unparalleled devotion, always ensuring that her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and love.
Doña Lupe was also a woman of deep faith, finding a second family at Nativity Church. Her service as a catechist, Eucharistic minister, choir member, and lector was a reflection of her belief in love, community and God. Even in her final days, her devotion never wavered, with her last outing being to attend Sunday Mass at Nativity—a place that filled her heart with peace and joy.
To her grandchildren who she lovingly referred to as Toria, Maxi, Zelsa, Solecito, Luisito, Nena, Kalisi, Luxiane, Nena and Vevita—she was known as “Nana Lupe,” the very embodiment of love. Her home was always stocked with treats, but the true sweetness came from her hugs, kisses, and playful spirit. Nana Lupe’s famous Mexican rice was not just food but a symbol of her care, served with love and laughter in abundance.
Doña Lupe will forever be remembered as a beacon of kindness, joy, and unwavering love. Her laughter, her songs, and her generous heart will continue to inspire all who were lucky enough to know her. The world was brighter with Doña Lupe in it, and her legacy of love and joy will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and community. We celebrate her life, her spirit, and the beautiful love she leaves behind.
