Howard William Sharpell, 94, was born in Manhattan, New York on August 23, 1924 and passed away in the Veteran's Hospital in La Jolla on January 21, 2019. He was born to Adolph Charles Sharpell, Jr and Lillian Trostels.
Howard proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was also a Prisoner of War during that time. He was involved in military sales for 39 years.
Within the communities of Vista and San Marcos, CA, Howard and his lovely wife coordinated multiple city activities; The Vista Street Faire, Renaissance Faire and the Chili Cookoffs, sharing hours of enjoyable time in the communities and with friends. Upon "Ginny's" death, Howard became extensively involved with the POW/MIA group in San Diego County. A historian worked with Howard and his story is told in a book, "I Once Was..." A World War II Transformation. He was named Veteran of the Year and for a brief time Howard mentored returning soldiers with PTSD at Camp Pendleton. He was very compassionate about being available to help other veterans.
Prior to living in North San Diego, Howard and his family resided on the East Coast. They enjoyed special times at the beaches in Lavallette, New Jersey and Southhold, Long Island with extended family that still live there.
Howard will be missed by so many in the community as he is now home with the Lord.
