Leland Eugene Martin "Marty," 76, was born in Los Angeles, CA on November 25, 1937 and passed away at his residence in Whittier, CA surrounded by his loving family on October 27, 2014.
Marty grew up in Montebello and Whittier. After graduating from Whittier High School, he proudly served four years in the United States Air Force. He began his career with the Montebello Fire Department on March 9, 1960. He served more then 33 years before retiring at the rank of Captain on October 23, 1993.
Leland Martin will be remembered for his distinctive and infectious laugh, his constant good humor, and his generous spirit. He always provided his crews with capable leadership, experienced mentoring and friendship. Marty was chosen as FIREMAN OF THE YEAR in 1975, an honor sponsored by the VFW. It was only the second year the honor/award was given and it was a very proud moment for his family, friends & fellow firefighters who all attended the ceremony. In typical fashion, he downplayed all the fuss, but deep down was truly moved and honored by the event. The Montebello Fire Department is saddened by his passing. The world is a lesser place without him. Our heart felt condolences go out to his family and friends.
Marty is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kathie, his daughter Karen, sons-in-law Phillip Rajotte and David Villasana, granddaughter Maggie, and brother Kenneth or âKDâ. He is predeceased by his parents, Pearl and Mabel, and his daughter Kristin.
