Luis Benavidez Garcia, a great man whose immeasurable legacy transcends beyond the 84 years of a well-lived and abundant life. Don Luis was born on August 28, 1937 in Ixtlahuacan del Rio, Jalisco, Mexico. He was the son of Agustin and Columba Garcia, farmhands who extolled on him and his siblings the values of love, faith, family, integrity, work, stewardship of land and water, education and discipline. In 1956, his family immigrated to California. He began working as a farmworker and eventually for the Vons Company where he worked for over 30+ years until he retired.
Don Luis, a family man who, with the love of his life Guadalupe Garcia, raised three children, Norma Edith, Maribel, and Luis Rene, in El Monte, CA. Education began at home, and every morning he modeled the way to his children by reading his newspapers, staying on top of the world's news and never missing a day of work. For Don Luis, a knowledgeable man, learning was not enough for his children but questioning and applying critical reasoning to everything that surrounded them.
Don Luis, a charitable man full of grace and compassion. Before terms like social justice, collective action, and equity were part of the community's language, Don Luis was on the front lines of the many local causes doing his part – helping those in need, hungry and unhoused. Through his deep engagement on local issues and as a proactive leader at Nativity Catholic Church, attending mass daily as an affirmation of his faith and beliefs, Don Luis' commitment to do the right thing is incomparable.
Don Luis, a noble, gregarious, curious and charismatic soul with his fedora hat and infectious smile, the life of the party, connector of people and backyard bandleader when the music played. Traveling the world for Don Luis is not a dream but a car trip, plane or boat ticket to adventure. More importantly, spending memorable time with family, grandchildren and above all holding hands with Doña Lupe, whether it was the front porch or strolling through a faraway plaza – they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in February 2021. Luis B. Garcia is a representation of a life well-lived, and his spirit lives on.
He is survived by his wife, Guadalupe P. Garcia. His three children and their spouses are Norma Edith Garcia-González and Rafael González, Dr. Maribel Garcia and Andrew Mora, and Luis R. Garcia. His grandchildren, Victoria Garcia, Itzel Garcia, Soleil Garcia, Luis R. Garcia, Maximo A. González, Kalixto A. González, Luxiano A. González, JennaDrew Mora and Genevieve A. Mora. His sisters, Eloisa Ramirez, Aurora Martinez, Refugio Gutierrez and Mercedes Carbajal
Luis Benavidez García fue un hombre extraordinario cuyo legado trasciende más allá de los 84 años de una vida abundante y plena. Don Luis nació el 28 de agosto de 1937 en Ixtlahuacán del Rio, Jalisco, México. Hijo de Agustín y Columbia García, trabajadores agrícolas que inculcaron a él y a sus hermanos los valores del amor, la fe, la familia, la integridad, el trabajo, el cuidado de la tierra y el agua, la educación y la disciplina. En 1956, su familia emigró a California, donde comenzó como trabajador agrícola para finalmente incorporarse a la compañía Vons, trabajando allí más de 30 años hasta su jubilación.
Don Luis era un hombre completamente dedicado a su familia. Junto al amor de su vida, la Sra. Guadalupe García, criaron a tres hijos, Norma Edith, Maribel y Luis René, en la cuidad de El Monte, California. La educación comenzó temprano en su hogar, y todas las mañanas daba el ejemplo a sus hijos al leer el periódico, estar siempre informado sobre los últimos acontecimientos mundiales y jamás faltar a su trabajo. Un hombre de gran cultura, para él no bastaba con que sus hijos aprendieran, sino que cuestionaran y aplicaran el razonamiento crítico a todo lo que los rodeaba.
Su espíritu caritativo se manifestaba con extrema gracia y compasión. Antes de que términos como justicia social, acción colectiva e igualdad formaran parte del lenguaje de la sociedad, Don Luis fue un pionero de numerosas causas locales, ayudando a los más necesitados, hambrientos y sin vivienda. A través de su profundo compromiso con los problemas locales y como líder activo en la Iglesia Católica de la Natividad, donde asistía a misa diariamente como afirmación de su fe y creencias, su compromiso de hacer siempre lo correcto es incomparable.
Un hombre noble, sociable, curioso y carismático con su sombrero de Panamá y su sonrisa contagiosa, era siempre el alma de las fiestas familiares, un gran conector de personas y líder de la banda cuando la música sonaba en el patio de su casa. Viajar por el mundo no era un sueño, sino un viaje en coche, avión o crucero hacia la aventura. Y lo más importante, disfrutar momentos inolvidables con su familia, nietos y, sobre todo, tomado de la mano con Doña Lupe ya sea en el porche de su casa o al pasear por alguna plaza lejana. La pareja celebró sus bodas de oro (50º aniversario) en febrero de 2021. Luis B. García es la representación de una vida bien vivida, y su espíritu transcenderá.
Don Luis deja a una familia unida conformada por su esposa, Guadalupe P. García; sus tres hijos y sus esposos Norma Edith García-González y Rafel González, la Dra. Maribel García y Andrew Mora, y Luis García; sus nietos Victoria García, Itzel García, Soleil García, Luis R. García, Máximo A. González, Kalixto A. González, Luxiano A.
