Manuel M. Gonzalez, 89, was born in Los Angeles on April 11, 1923 to Isabel and Anthony Gonzalez, and passed away at his residence in Whittier surrounded by his family on July 2, 2012. He was the eldest of 10 children and grew up and attended school in Los Angeles. He was previously employed with Eastside Dairies as a milkman for 30 years. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was given an Honorable Discharge.
A famous writer once said "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give". If that is true, then Manuel made a great life. He was the most giving person you could ever know.
He later met Alice Medina and fell in love and got married. Together they had three children; David, Randy and Dennis. They lived in East Los Angeles before moving to Montebello where they raised their three boys. They were married for 40 years.
Manuel loved the outdoors and working in the yard, pulling weeds with none other than a screwdriver. He thought that was the best tool! He never let anyone do the dishes because, according to him, he did it best. We all loved that! But most of all he loved to sing and dance. He could dance your socks off…..just ask Becky!
Manuel was a remarkably thoughtful, hardworking and compassionate man. He loved being with family. He loved being out here by the pond just relaxing, which is why it was appropriate to celebrate his life right here.
Do not stand and weep.
I am not here. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand and weep.
I am not here. I do not sleep.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 4pm at the family's residence. A military honor guard will provide him with military honors at the service.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Randolph and Becky Gonzalez of Whittier, his son, David Patrick Gonzalez of Rancho Cucamonga and his son, Lloyd Dennis Gonzalez of Texas.
