Margaret McFadyen, age 83, met her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 in Long Beach, California, surrounded by many who loved her dearly.
Born on July 25, 1933 in Glasgow, Scotland, she and her husband brought their first two children with them to America on April 5, 1967 with not much more than $200 dollars in their pockets. Margaret, and her husband John, who passed away a few years ago sacrificed so much to make sure their three children (a third joined the family shortly after arriving in America) were given an opportunity to live the American Dream. “We’ve been blessed but we worked hard,” were Margaret’s thoughts towards the life and legacy she leaves behind.
Despite living in California for 50 years Margaret always loved Scotland, never losing her accent (she claimed it was because she couldn’t find a better one). They made frequent trips over the years to go “back home”, taking their children as well as several grandchildren to visit the land they spoke so fondly of. Margaret often said that she was fortunate to have two homes, her first being back in Scotland and the other, here in America.
Margaret was known as “Nana” or “Nanny” to not only her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but to many other people who had the privilege of knowing her. She had a love for life and for her family. Her pool was always open and she spent many of her later years sitting by that pool as her grandchildren and many others learned to swim. She always made sure to have cookies and ice cream ready for those with a sweet tooth and her homemade lentil soup will be greatly missed.
Her family and friends will miss Margaret dearly, but she leaves behind a legacy of the full life that she lived in both of her “homes”.
Margaret was met at Heaven's gate by her husband of 56 years, John McFadyen who preceded her in death.
Margaret is survived by her loving family: Daughter, Linda (James) Clem of Pismo Beach, Son, Ian (Laura) McFadyen of Long Beach, California, Daughter, Allison (Richard) Smith of Long Beach, California, Grandson, Brian (Sarah) Clem of Elk Ridge, Utah, Granddaughter, Christina (Jason) Clem of Salem, Massachusetts, Grandson, Joshua Clem of Lompoc, California, Granddaughter, Jaclynn Smith of Long Beach, California, Granddaughter, Kayla (Shane) Kaler of Atascadero, California,Granddaughter, Chloe Smith of Long Beach, California, Grandson, William Smith of Long Beach, California, Grandson, Christian Smith of Long Beach, California, Grandson, Jedediah Smith of Long Beach, California, Granddaughter, Chelsea McFadyen of Long Beach, California, Granddaughter, Amber McFadyen of Long Beach, California, Granddaughter, Megan McFadyen of Long Beach, California, Great-Grandchildren, Kristin, Malaya, Ashlyn, Sydni, Tierra, Samuel, Gracia Mae, and Calvin, Brother, Frank (Isabel) Whittaker of Scotland, Sister, and Ann (Billy) Edwards of Scotland.
