Carmen Alfaro was born in El Salvador on September 2, 1954 to Bibian Amaya and Maria Santos Bonilla. She was the second eldest of 12 children. She was a loving mother to, Elizabeth, Danny, and Stefanie and grandmother to Jesse and David.
Carmen migrated to the United States in 1970 at the age of 16 with her sister Teresa. She and her sister came here to work and help their mother bring the rest of their family to join them in the United States. This altruistic quality defined Carmen throughout her life in many ways.
As a single mother, she worked hard to provide for her children and raise them in a loving home. It was clear to everybody around her that her children were the most important people in her life. This love only grew and was extended when it came to her grandchildren. Carmen made sure that everyone’s needs and wants were always met. Just ask any of her kids or grandkids what back-to-school shopping meant to her. Macy’s was her favorite go-to store!
For over 14 years she hosted a weekly bible study in her home. She took pride in making dinners for her group, led by David Jo. During this time her home was open to anybody that wanted to attend.
Carmen found a second family in her time at Casa Hogar Sion an orphanage in Tijuana, MX. It was a passion driven by her faith. The girls she taught to sew at the orphanage all truly loved her.. During the Christmas season Carmen tirelessly collected gift donations for each child. If asked about her time at Casa Hogar, her eyes would sparkle from the love she felt for “her girls”.
Carmen’s other passions included soccer, music, movies, cooking, reading, politics, and of course penny slot machines! She was intelligent and very outgoing. You would often find her watching, debating or enjoying these activities with her loved ones.
Her voice.....she had the most beautiful velvety voice and a gold record to prove it! We were so lucky to get to enjoy it. Our family gatherings always ended up in karaoke sessions and she was the star performer! A party wasn’t a party without a song from our dear Carmen. She had a gift of song and loved to share it. Whether singing a special request or just giving a full on singing lesson, it was definitely her passion.
Carmen was preceded in death by her parents, Bibian and Maria, and by her brother Carlos Amaya. She is survived by her 3 children, 2 grandchildren, 10 siblings, 22 nieces and nephews, & 14 great nieces and nephews.
