Maria Consuelo Licon, 90 was born April 5, 1926 in El Paso, Texas and entered into rest January 22, 2017 in Hemet, California.

Some of you knew her as Mama, Tia, Abuelita, Conny, Chelo, and Maria. To me she was simply Grandma.

She was grandma to more than just her grandchildren. Her door was always open—literally. She rarely locked it. You could just walk in and people often did. Neighbors, friends, and family all knew they had a place to stay for a few minutes, a few hours, or a few days, to enjoy her hospitality and her generosity and—her famous dishes like her Albondigas, Sopas, and my personal favorite, her BEANS. The door was always open and the food was always plentiful.

I particularly remember that she always made sure that we didn’t leave her house without her blessing. “Que Dios te Bendiga mijo or mija.” Even when she would get upset with us, she would just change her tone.

As much as we remember her for being sweet and funny, I can’t help but remember cuando nos reganaba for that is part of what made her who she was as far as trying to keep us on the right track.

Grandma had a fun spirit; she loved to dance and had a great sense of humor. She always reminded me that I was smart and important and she helped build my confidence.

When I think of her the words strength and independence come to mind. She showed me that you always have to work hard for the things that you want in life.

In her last moments I made a promise that I will always have her with me in my heart and mind. I told her “la quiero mucho y voy a salir adelante en parte de Usted.”

And with all that being said I just want to say thank you grandma for making me the man I am today.

Maria is survived by her loving children: Daughter Elva Licon of Hemet, California, Son Ricardo Licon of Victorville, California, Daughter Olivia Licon of Whittier, California, Son Beto Licon of Long Beach, California and beloved Grandchilden, Omar Licon of Hemet, California and Steven B.
