Marina Perez Romo, devoted sister, aunt and cousin, succumbed late on the night of Aug. 27, 2017 after a long struggle with cancer. She was 55, and at the end she was in the company of three close family members. Her gentle personality, humor, kindness and humility inspired their friendship and devotion. Born Nov. 14, 1961 in Los Angeles, Marina was a longtime employee of the state of California. She worked over two decades for the state Contractors Board as an office technician and before that for the Bureau of Automotive Repairs in the state Department of Consumer Affairs. Marina attended Divine Saviour School in the neighborhood of Cypress Park. As a girl she participated in the church choir her mother organized and attended numerous Dodgers games. In 1979, she graduated from Holy Family High School and then went to work for the May Co. department store at the Eagle Rock Plaza. She rode the bus to work until learning to drive at 21. Marina lived most of her life in the Arvia Street home where she grew up, with relatives from both sides of her family peppering the neighborhood. In the late 2000s, Marina bought a condominium in La Habra; she relished her independence. When she learned she was pre-diabetic about 2009, she threw herself into managing her symptoms through exercise and diet, and she began taking classes at Cal State Fullerton to become a dietician. With her family she became a crusader for healthy eating. Throughout her life, she took great satisfaction in being a thoughtful and helpful aunt to her nieces and nephews, whom she loved deeply. In her final year, Marina's goal was to survive for the birth of her niece's baby. Marina was survived in death by her mother Maria Evangelina Perez Romo, who passed in 1987, and her father Conrado Mejia Romo, who died February 2016. Marina is survived by her sister Leticia Shea and husband Lawrence Shea; brother Conrad Romo; brother Jaime Romo and his wife Philomena; brother Rene Romo and his wife Heather; sister Teresa Romo; and 10 nieces and nephews along with their children.
