Mary Elizabeth Petersen Profile Photo
Mary Elizabeth Petersen, was born in Michigan on December 30, 1914, the only child of Engel Van Sluys and his wife, Rena Wiersma Van Sluys. Both of them had immigrated from The Netherlands before they met. Mary and her parents moved when she was 13 years old to Redlands, CA, where she later graduated in English from the University of Redlands.

Mrs. Petersen, along with her husband Richard, who predeceased her by 13 years, were business owners for over 40 years in manufacturing equipment for the exhaust ventilation industry. Mrs. Petersen joined the business and, later, continued to work there on a part-time basis until a week before she passed.

Mary Petersen was sharp, active, and independent until the end. She had lived in her Downey home of 50 years until she passed on March 31, 2014 at the age of 99.

A simple graveside service will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 11:30am at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.

She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Petersen (John Jackson) of Denver CO, her son, David Petersen of Riverside, and her daughter Elinor (David) Buck of La Habra. She also leaves her two granddaughters, Corrie Buck and Allison Buck, both living in Southern California.
