Maurice "John" Garten, 75, was born on June 7, 1944 in Los Angeles, California, and entered into eternal rest on January 29, 2020 in Costa Mesa, California.
John grew up in Los Angeles and attended St. Catherine Military Academy, Montebello High School, and Long Beach State where he earned a Bachelors degree in history.
He moved to Orange County in 1985 and had two sons Michael and Andrew (Mikey and Drew to him). John was active in his sons' athletic events, coaching Andrew to soccer championships and following Michael’s football/baseball activities through youth travel and Mater Dei. He remained an avid Mater Dei football fan until his passing and was a die hard Dodgers, Trojans, and Celtics fan too.
An avid cigar smoker, you could find his alter-poker ego, Johnny Bananas, giving someone a bad beat at the tobacco barn in lake forest, or sitting in his backyard in Costa Mesa with his beloved dog Daffy.
He spent the last years of his life harassing and being harassed by a house full of loving granddaughters and was lucky enough to pass peacefully while holding two off their hands.
He is survived by his two sons, his loving daughter-in-law, 4 granddaughters and a demanding Labrador. Enjoy the colosseum in the sky old man, we love you and you’ll forever be the patriarch of our little island of misfit toys. Fight on!
