Dr. Richard Dean Guengerich, age 93, was born on Nov.13,1927 in Wayland, Iowa and entered into eternal rest on April 10, 2021 in Downey, CA. His family moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1941.
Dr. Guengerich attended Manuel Arts High School, Pepperdine College, and USC. He married June Marie Eddy in 1950, who passed away Oct. 25, 2017.
Dr. Guengerich enjoyed many years working in schools - teaching, coaching basketball, being Vice-Principal, Principal, Assistant Superintendant, and Superintendant, starting in Lompoc in 1952, Campo in 1955, Torrance in 1959, and Bellflower in 1972. In 1966, he moved his family to Downey. After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling across the U.S.A., the Holy Land, and several other countries around the world.
He accepted Jesus Christ, God's Son, as his personal Savior at the age of twelve and was active in church throughout his life. He was a member of Immanuel Mennonite Church, First Baptist Church of Downey, and Calvary Chapel Downey.
He is survived by three daughters, Donna (Richard) Schmid of Salem, OR, Karen (Les) Bell of Chantilly, VA, and Cathy (Andy) Diaz of Trabuco Canyon, CA, his nine grandchildren, Heidi, Gary and Carol Schmid, Annette, David and Audrey Bell, Adam Diaz, Carolyn Hoskins and Kurt Diaz. He also leaves eleven great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, June Guengerich.
He loved his family and his many friends, and prayed that all would trust Jesus Christ to save them from sin, and accept His free gift of eternal life, so that they will have assurance that they will be together with him in Heaven.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at 10:00am at Calvary Chapel Downey where he attended church for many years. A private graveside service will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
