Long time Whittier Business man Robert F “Bob” Wilkinson passed away April 3, 2016 at the advanced age of 86. Bob was a talented Insurance agent who had is office on Painter Ave for over 30 years. Bob enjoyed providing both professional relationships as well as personal relationships with his friends. Always the competitor Bob also enjoyed his weekly golf outings at Imperial golf course and would happily extract money from his gamesmanship.
Bob retired in the later part of his life and was able to enjoy his continued love of golf with his children and in future years with his grandchildren. Bob was a very competitive golfer and won the club championship at La Costa as well as with his traveling Centinella golf group. Bob would also challenge the club champions at Laguna Woods.
Bob was married to his wife Vivian for of 65 years. They met on a blind date in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was love at first site, Bob was enamored by Vivian’s beauty and charm. Together they welcomed 5 boys into their world. Terry was the oldest and later joined Bob in the Insurance Company, Les, Allen, Tom, and David. All the children were born in Edmonton and the entire family moved to the promised land of California. At one time all 5 of the children were playing ice hockey at the Norwalk ice arena. Bob and Vivian were both very proud of their children and very busy hauling them from rink to rink.
Bob’s life was full of adventures every year taking his family on summer vacations. The first few years travelling back to Edmonton to visit family and friends. Bob would drive for three days to arrive at Pigeon Lake, we all would have a week at the lake and back in the car for the exhausting three day trip. Our last family trip was in 1969, as soon as we arrived at the lake it rained and rained and rained. Bob had enough after 3 days told Vivian and the kids to get in the car we are going home to Southern California because it doesn’t rain every damn day.
Bob continued to take the family on summer vacation, now we would stay in California. Bob and a good family friend Phil Arnott rented a houseboat on Shasta Lake where we spent a week enjoying the water and everyones company after being on the road for only 8 hours!
Bob would then rent a cabin at Bass Lake for a number of years until the children left his and Vivian’s nest and went on their own. Our dog Ricky loved Bass Lake he would run for the first 2 days of each vacation at Bass Lake. Ricky would be exhausted and sleep for an entire 24 hour period only to repeat the same procedure! What a dog we had!
Bob and Vivian retired and lived on the golf course at La Costa. Bob would golf every day from 9 to 5 with an hour lunch as required by his fellow members and guests. Bob enjoyed watching the PGA tournament on his course never missing a single year for 20+ years. Family and friends enjoyed the week long activities and also the chance of winning the pool every year. Bob enjoyed being able to watch Jack Nicholas, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, and all the new up and coming players.
