On the night of April 1, 2023, Samuel “Sammy” Rivas, passed away suddenly due to pancreatitis complications in Downey, California. He leaves behind his wife, Martha “Chely” of 40 years, four children (Samuel Alejandro, Omar Jorge, Erik Joel, and Stephanie), and four grandchildren (Sophia Nicole, Maya Kinsley, Riley Grace, and Elena Rose).

Samuel was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico to Samuel, Sr. and Gloria Rivas on September 21, 1957; both of whom have departed. Together they had ten children, Samuel was the third eldest and first son. He leaves behind his siblings: Gloria, Tere, Urbano, Adriana, Mario, Miguel, Javier, Ruben, and Lucy.

His love for soccer started at a very young age, as he could always be found kicking a soccer ball in his childhood neighborhood. He made his debut with the Gallos of Jalisco in 1978 where he played before signing with Chivas in 1980 as a striker. He is still remembered for making the winning goal, eliminating America in the semi-finals and prompting the huge brawl of 1982-1983 ‘El Súper Clásico’. In 1985, he went to Morelia and later played with Tigres of Monterey. After his retirement from fútbol in 1988, he continued his passion by coaching the youth in the United States. He was very proud to have coached for the Chivas USA-MLS. He remains a legend of the game.

He met the love of his life, Chely, in Guadalajara while she was visiting during the summer of 1980. After a few months of courting, he had to decide whether to sign with Chivas or Leon. Leon was offering more money, but if he chose Chivas, he would be able to continue with their courtship. Chely on the other end, had to decide whether to continue her studies at UCI (University of California at Irvine) or put her future in the hands of this famous “fútbol star.” They both chose love and the rest is history.

In 2001, Samuel became a civil servant when he joined the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) as an Eligibility Worker. He took pride in helping the residences of Los Angeles County in applying for assistance in their time of need. He retired from his county career in September 2022, after 22 years of service.

Samuel “Sammy” Rivas will always be remembered for his contagious smile, his warm hospitality, and his love of life. He was a devout Catholic and had a strong love for Christ. He treasured his time with his friends and never took for granted the loving memories he created with family. He will be missed dearly.

We thank you for being an amazing husband, father, grandfather, son, tio, brother, in-law, friend, and coach to all. We love you and will always keep you close in our hearts!

En la noche del primero de Abril, Samuel “Sammy” Rivas fallecio inesperadamente por complicaciones de pancreatitis en Downey, California. Le sobreviven su esposa, Martha “Chely” de 40 años de matrimonio, cuatro hijos (Samuel Alejandro, Omar Jorge, Erik Joel, y Stephanie), y cuatro nietas (Sophia Nicole, Maya Kinsley, Riley Grace, y Elena Rose).

Samuel, hijo de Samuel y Gloria Rivas ya fallecidos, nació en Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico el 21 del Septiembre de 1957. Sus padres tuvieron diez hijos, Samuel fue tercer hijo mayor. Le sobreviven sus hermanos: Gloria, Tere, Urbano, Adriana, Mario, Miguel, Javier, Ruben, y Lucy.

Su amor por el fútbol comenzo a una temprana edad, siempre se le podia encontrar pateando una pelota de fútbol en el barrio de la infancia. Samuel hizo su debut con Los Gallos de Jalisco en 1978 donde jugó hasta que firmó con Chivas en 1980 como delantero. Todavía es recordado por meter el gol decisivo, eliminando al America en las semifinales y provocando la gran pelea del 1982-1983 en el ‘Supér Clásico.’ En 1985, Samuel continuó jugando con el equipo de Morelia y después con Tigres de Monterey. Enseguida se retiro del fútbol en 1988, continuando su pasión entrenando a la juventud en los Estados Unidos. Samuel estaba muy orgulloso de haber entrenado al equipo CHIVAS USA en la MLS. Samuel sigue siendo una leyenda en el fútbol.

Samuel encontró al amor de su vida, Chely, en Guadalajara cuando ella entreno las bastoneras del equipo Jalisco en el verano del 1980. Después de unos meses de noviazgo, Samuel tuvo que decidir entre firmar con Chivas o Leon. Leon le ofrecia mas dinero, pero si elegía al equipo de las Chivas, podría seguir con su noviazgo. Chely, tambien tuvo que decidir entre continuar sus estudios en UCI (Universidad de California en Irvine) o poner su futuro en las manos de su “Estrella de Fútbol.” Los dos decidieron por el amor, el resto es historia.

En 2001, Samuel se convirtió en un funcionario público comenzando a trabajar para el Departamento de Servicios Sociales Públicos (DPSS) como un trabajador de elegibilidad. El estaba orgulloso de ayudar a los residents del condado del Los Angeles a aplicar para la asistencia en sus momentos difíciles. Samuel se jubiló de su carrera en el condado en Septiembre del 2022, después de 22 años de servicio.

Samuel “Sammy” Rivas siempre sera recordado por sus sonrisa contagiosa, su hospitalidad y su amor por la vida. El era un Católico dévoto, tenía un amor profundo a Cristo. Atesoraba el tiempo con sus amistades y nunca tomó a la ligera las lindas memorias que creo con su familia. Lo echaremos mucho de menos.
