I think people’s first impressions of our dad was that he was a serious person, but once you got to know him, you’d discover he was the opposite. His dry, sarcastic humor caught everyone off guard from time to time. He was also a man set in his ways. Stubborn at times, but a good man. An understanding one and a great father. Sometimes when mom was being difficult we would run to dad to blow off steam. Heh. Heh. He taught us to be responsible, maybe a bit too cautious, hard workers and to be ourselves. Even though we bumped heads more than I feel comfortable admitting, at the end of the day we understood and respected each other. Most of his life revolved around work and sleep. He would swear to you he was watching the soccer game on tv, but you knew he was napping. He loved going back to his hometown, and he would take a 3 week vacation every year. When we were younger, the trips were in summer, but once we entered high school and started attending summer school, his vacation schedule was not tied down to a certain schedule. He was careful about where he spend his money, but not when we were on vacation. When on vacation, he liked splurging. He did this once a year. Most of his working years he spend as a cook. He only ever worked in 2 kitchens in the span of 40 years, but he would rarely cook at home. He would say he did that at work, why would he want to work at home? All in all, he liked spoiling his coworkers, pushing my mom’s buttons, pretending he didn’t like the cats even when they slept on him, wanting his daughter to go into nursing for some odd reason and butting heads with his son over soccer.
He will be missed.
